How Indiana U.S. Reps voted on removing Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker

Indiana Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives voted against ousting Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., as Speaker of the House Tuesday after Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz brought forward a motion to vacate the leadership seat.

The overall vote in the House did not go in McCarthy's favor, as 216 voted yes to removing the California Republican and 210 voted no. The vote Tuesday came after Congressional lawmakers over the weekend narrowly passed a stopgap measure that averted a government shutdown.

All seven of Indiana’s Republican representatives voted against removing McCarthy from office. The state’s two Democratic representatives, Andre Carson and Frank Mrvan voted in favor.

In a call with IndyStar ahead of the vote Tuesday, Rep. Jim Banks, a noted conservative voice in the House, called Gaetz’s motion to vacate “a distraction.”

“Going back to where we started in January with multiple rounds of speaker votes only sets us back from advancing our agenda,” said Banks, who is running for Senate in 2024.

  • Rudy Yakym, Republican, 2nd Congressional District: No

  • Jim Banks, Republican, 3rd Congressional District: No

  • James Baird, Republican, 4th Congressional District: No

  • Victoria Spartz, Republican, 5th Congressional District: No

  • Greg Pence, Republican, 6th Congressional District: No

  • Andre Carson, Democrat, 7th Congressional District: Yes

  • Larry Bucshon, Republican, 8th Congressional District: No

  • Erin Houchin, Republican, 9th Congressional District: No
