Indianapolis firefighters dye canal green after mechanical issues with fountain

Indianapolis firefighters assisted in dyeing the city's canal green for St. Patrick's Day on March 16, 2023.

A green St. Patrick's Day after all.

Mechanical issue with a fountain threatened Indianapolis’ traditional Greening of the Canal event Thursday, but the city’s fire department intervened.

Firefighters with the Indianapolis Fire Department used hoses from a firetruck to spray dye into the canal, said Mark Bode, director of communications for the city.

The event took place Thursday from 11a.m. to noon with Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett in attendance and live entertainment from The Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers and Laughing Jack.
