IMPD releases video of police shooting that injured man at south-side gas station

Update: Indianapolis police released a critical incident video on Dec. 1 with more details concerning an officer involved shooting. The video contains graphic images and language and is not suitable for all ages.

Update: Indianapolis police on Oct. 26 identified the officer who shot Antoine Beech as 8-year veteran patrol officer Ryan Thomas. On Nov. 7, prosecutors charged Beech with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

Original story: One man was injured in a shooting involving Indianapolis police Thursday morning near the intersection of Shelby and Raymond streets on the city's south side.

Shortly after 7 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were at the Speedway gas station at 2053 Shelby Street investigating an unrelated robbery.

While at the gas station, officers were alerted that there was a man in a vehicle who possibly had a warrant.

Police approached the man, later identified as 38-year-old Antoine Beech, as he sat in the passenger seat of a Chevrolet Impala. They saw a firearm was within Beech’s reach and instructed him not to reach for the gun.

“Beech allegedly reached for the gun and one officer discharged his department-issued firearm striking Beech,” IMPD Lt. Shane Foley said.

Beech was shot at least once and was listed in stable condition.

Body worn camera footage released Dec. 1 revealed police shot Beech in the right hand. He also received a laceration to his chest but medics found no bullet fragment or foreign object in Beech's chest, police said.

Investigators closed the entrance to the convenience store and the gas pumps with crime scene tape at the Speedway as they gathered evidence.

IMPD’s Critical incident response team is investigating, while the department’s internal affairs unit is conducting a separate administrative inquiry.

Law enforcement investigate Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, after a man in a vehicle was shot at least once by Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers near the intersection of Shelby and Raymond streets on the city's south side.

The civilian-majority use of force review board will conduct a mandatory hearing at the conclusion of the criminal investigation. The officer who fired his gun has been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure, according to the department's news release.

Beech had two warrants for his arrest, one for violation of probation in a drug and resisting law enforcement case and the other related to operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to court records.

Thursday’s shooting is the latest in a string involving Indianapolis police officers in the last few months. Most recently, an off-duty officer shot a man after trying to diffuse a situation at an east-side bar early Saturday.

Anyone with information on Thursday’s shooting is asked to contact IMPD Det. Sgt. Prater at 317-327-3475.  Alternatively, anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 317-262-8477.

IMPD to look for commonalities in recent police shootings

“We understand that members of the community, the media and others have questions about why are these incidents taking place,” Foley said from the scene of the latest shooting involving an officer. “We have those same questions.”

The department wants to partner with an independent group to see if there is a pattern or commonality among the recent shootings, Foley said.

It is possible there may not be commonalities, but the department wants to identify any additional training for its officers or education for the community that could stop future shootings involving officers, he said.

The department has not identified a group it would work with on these efforts yet, Foley said.

“Our officers don't want these to happen, our communities don't want these to happen, sometimes officers are faced with situations where they have to take action,” Foley said. “At the same time, if there are ways as an agency and a community that we can reduce these incidents, we certainly want that.”
