Indianapolis Symphony selects Su-Han Yang as new assistant conductor

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has hired a new assistant conductor, Su-Han Yang, who will begin his tenure early this year. He'll conduct the symphony's Discovery Concerts, help Classical Series conductors during rehearsals and host Words on Music pre-concert discussions.

“After just a few minutes of working with the ISO during the audition, I felt an immense joy making music with the orchestra," Yang said in a news release from the symphony Thursday announcing his hire. "I am so grateful and very much looking forward to collaborating with the ISO.”

Yang will take over after the departure of the Resident Conductor Jacob Joyce, who is now assistant conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, according to the release. Joyce will return Jan. 13 and 14 to conduct the Indianapolis Symphony for a program with soprano Julia Bullock and music by Benjamin Britten, Samuel Barber and Carl Nielsen.

Yang, who is Taiwanese, is the associate conductor of the Taiwan Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, and he was the first-prize winner of the 10th International Grzegorz Fitelberg Competition for Conductors in 2017. The same year, he studied with Jun Märkl, the Indianapolis Symphony's artistic advisor, at the Conducting Academy of the Pacific Music Festival.

He's been invited to collaborate with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, among others. Yang also has conducted the Camerata Taiwan on their annual concert tour of Taiwan and on a tour in Germany last year. Also in 2022, he conducted Humperdinck's Opera "Hänsel und Gretel" at the National Taichung Theater and contemporary music at the Weiwuying International Music Festival, both in Taiwan.

Yang has been part of the Mentoring Program of Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation and worked with Riccardo Muti on the production of Verdi’s "Falstaff" at the Italian Opera Academy in 2015. He graduated from the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, the National Taiwan Normal University and the Tunghai University.
