Indianapolis warming centers: Where to go for warmth amid winter storm, frigid temps

Original, Feb. 3, 2022: After a day of rain and wintry mix that left roads and sidewalks covered with a thin sheet of ice, snow is falling across much of Central Indiana.

On Thursday morning, meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis said wind gusts may reach 35 mph and could reduce visibility as an expected 4 to 6 inches of snow falls across the metro area.

The winter storm warning for Marion County is expected to expire early Friday morning, according to the Weather Service. Conditions are expected to be cold but sunny through the end of the week, with a high of 21 degrees Friday and an overnight low of zero. Saturday is expected to be slightly warmer — daytime could reach 22 degrees, dipping to 9 degrees overnight.

Indy Parks

The following Indy Parks family centers will be open to the public as warming centers during regular business hours (hours vary, complete information can be found at indy.gov/activity/indy-parks-severe-weather-plan):

  • Bethel Park: 2850 Bethel Avenue

  • Brookside Park: 3500 Brookside Parkway South Drive

  • Christian Park: 4200 English Avenue

  • Frederick Douglass Park: 1616 E. 25th St.

  • Garfield Park: 2345 Pagoda Drive

  • Krannert Park: 605 S. High School Rd.

  • Municipal Gardens: 1831 Lafayette Rd.

  • Rhodius Park: 1720 W. Wilkins St.

  • Riverside Park: 2420 N. Riverside East Drive

  • Thatcher Park: 4649 W. Vermont St.

  • Washington Park: 3130 E. 30th St.

  • Watkins Park: 2360 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St.

  • Windsor Village Park: 6510 E. 25th St.

Horizon House

If the air temperature falls below 10 degrees or the wind chill falls below zero, Horizon House (1033 Washington St.) is available as a warming center from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Outreach Inc.

If the air temperature is at or below zero, Outreach Inc. (2416 E. New York St.) is available as a warming center to youth ages 14-24 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
