India's Karnataka State Suspends School Amid Hijab Row

The chief minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj S Bommai, tweeted on Tuesday, February 8, that he had ordered a three-day holiday for all high schools and colleges amid an ongoing row over the wearing of hijabs.

The Times of India traced the dispute to January, when several girls at a school in Udupi said they were barred from wearing the hijab in class.

Protests and counter protests followed, the Times of India said, with violent outbreaks leading to the suspension of school.
