Indigenous communities in Mexico mark Columbus Day

STORY: Dressed in colourful costumes and performing traditional dances, members of various indigenous communities, many coming from the southern state of Oaxaca, paraded through the iconic Reforma Avenue.

Zulema Aguilar, an indigenous demonstrator from Veracruz state, said she wanted Mexican people to take pride in their indigenous origins and their ability to raise their voices.

October 12 marks the anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas, in 1492.

But in recent years, the focus of the festivity has increasingly turned towards the heritage and plight of indigenous people subjugated by European settlers.
