Indigenous protesters face off with police in Ecuador
STORY: Tear gas, stones and military pellets flew during the confrontation with anti-riot personnel after Ecuador's armed forces warned they would not allow ongoing protests against President Guillermo Lasso's economic policies to damage the country's democracy.
Thousands of demonstrators have marched in Quito over the last week to demand concessions from Lasso, including a fuel price cut, a halt to the expansion of oil production and mining, more time for farmers to pay debt and budget increases for healthcare.
Some highways and public transportation were closed as residents woke up. Since protests began a week ago, major routes entering Quito have been stopped.
