Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site presents a program on "Carolina Blues: Indigo on the Cape Fear" in conjunction with the Southport Maritime Museum, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at 8884 St. Phillips Road SE, Winnabow. The event explores the process used by skilled enslaved African labor to extract valuable dye from the indigo plants. Participants will have a chance to view and work an active fermentation vat. Also dyeing demonstrations will occur throughout the course of the program. Free for all ages.

Free clean up week at Brunswick County Landfill

Brunswick County Solid Waste and Recycling Division will host a free clean up week at the Brunswick County Landfill, Sept. 18-23 from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Residents and property owners can dispose of:

  • Antifreeze

  • Clothing

  • Electronics

  • Fluorescent bulbs

  • Gasoline

  • Household batteries

  • Latex paint

  • Metal

  • Oil filters

  • Shoes

  • Smoke detectors

  • Tires

  • Yard debris

  • Used cooking oil

  • Used oil

John E. Jacobs American Legion meeting

The John E. Jacobs American Legion Post #68 will hold its monthly meeting Thursday, Sept. 21 at the Magnolia Greens Golf Course, located at 1800 Tommy Jacobs Drive, Leland. General meeting at 6 p.m. in the banquet building next to Blossoms restaurant. The speaker will be Dan Dodge, who will discuss service awards and pinning. Anyone wishing to have dinner at Blossoms Restaurant prior to the meeting, should arrive at 4:45 p.m. All veterans are welcome to attend.

Museum of Coastal Carolina programs

Sea Tales: The Snorkel Bunnies: A Sea Turtle Adventure, 11 a.m.-noon Thursday, Sept. 21. Learn how to preserve and protect the seas, waterways, and endangered sea turtles. Participants can also complete a fun sea turtle craft.

Coastal Connections: Box turtles, 11 am.-noon Saturday, Sept. 23. Visitors can explore fun facts about North Carolina's state reptile, the Eastern Box Turtle, and can meet a live one in residence at the museum. Participants can complete a fun turtle craft.

Shallotte Summerfest concert series

The Brunswick Parks & Recreation Department presents the Shallotte Summerfest concert series. The North Tower Band will perform 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 at the Mulberry Park Amphitheater, 123 Mulberry St., Shallotte. Bring a chair or blanket.
