Individual bowling roundup: Holt, Mason, Portland, Ovid-Elsie, P-W have regional champions

Holt junior Nick Schaberg already won one of the biggest tournaments of the season when he finished as the CAAC singles champion earlier this month.

He added to that success Saturday by winning the Division 1 individual bowling regional at Royal Scot in Lansing.

Schaberg rolled a 244 or better in each game while finishing with a six-game series of 1,528. He finished 248 pins ahead of runner-up Griffin Henderson of Swartz Creek.

Schaberg was one of two bowlers from Greater Lansing to finish in the top 10 and advance to the state finals out of the regional. Eastern’s Evan Gonzalez finished ninth with a 1,135 series.

Division 2 at Spectrum Lanes

Jonathon Hendershot had a score of at least 200 in five of his six games while finishing as a regional champion.

Hendershot, a junior, had a pinfall total of 1,304 while winning the Division 2 regional. He was 17 pins ahead of runner-up Zeke Heerema of Grand Rapids Christian.

Hendershot, who also contributed to Mason winning a team regional title, was one of six bowlers from Greater Lansing to advance to the state finals.

DeWitt had four bowlers advance led by senior Bryson Adams, who placed fifth with a pin total of 1,166. Narciso Garza (sixth), Paul Platte (eighth) and Emerson Selden (10th) also advanced for DeWitt.

The other qualifier was Mason’s Landon Hoffman, who placed seventh.

Division 3 at Sherman Lanes

Behind a strong final game, Portland sophomore Alec McGinnis finished as a singles regional champion. McGinnis had a score of 227 in his sixth game and knocked down 1,214 pins in the regional. He was seven pins ahead of runner-up Korbin Tenbrink of Orchard View.

Lakewood’s Philip Butler was the other qualifier and finished eighth.

Division 3 at M-66 Bowl

Lansing Catholic and Stockbridge each had individuals qualify for the state finals out of this regional Sunday. Lansing Catholic senior James Wheeler finished fifth, while Stockbridge senior Mason Keene placed ninth.

Division 2 at Richfield Bowl

Owosso sophomore Camden Caswell finished seventh to advance to the state finals. Caswell was the lone area bowler to qualify out of the regional and had a score of 1,162.

Division 2 at Westgate

Ionia senior Mason Hodges finished tied for ninth to qualify for the state finals. Hodges had a six-game total of 1,122 to earn a top-10 finish by one pin.

Division 3 at Alert Bowling Lanes

Ovid-Elsie freshman Devyn Pugsley placed fourth with a six-game series of 1,138 to earn a trip to next week’s state finals.

Division 4 at Northern Lanes

Leslie had a pair of bowlers finish in the top 10 and advance to next week’s singles state finals. Junior Ian Hultberg had a series of 1,143 while finishing seventh for Leslie. Ashton Gauthier was 10th for the Blackhawks.

Fowler’s Thomas Halfman was the other area qualifier and finished ninth.

GIRLS

Division 2 at Spectrum Lanes

Charlotte freshman Savannah Portillo led the area individuals and placed third at the regional with 1,182 pins.

Portillo was among four area individuals to finish in the top 10 and advance. DeWitt’s Madison Beckner finished sixth, while Mason’s Adriana Thomas was seventh and Charlotte’s Allison Slanker finished eighth.

Division 1 at Royal Scot

Holt had three individuals finish in the top 10 and advance to the next week’s state finals.

Senior Alissa VanHorn led the finishers for the Rams and took fourth with a six-game score of 1,090. Sophomore Madison Rue tied for fifth with a six-game series of 1,069 and sophomore Lola Knox was 10th for Holt.

Division 3 at Alert Lanes

Ovid-Elsie senior Gracie Schultz rolled games of 217 and 234 to close her six-game series while finishing as the regional champion. Schultz finished as the champion by seven pins over Midland Bullock Creek’s Brooklynn Marshall with her total of 1,145.

Corunna senior Carly Pavka was the other area qualifier and finished sixth.

Division 4 at Northern Lanes

Pewamo-Westphalia junior Kennedy Cassel concluded her six-game series with back-to-back games of 191 while finishing as a regional champion. Cassel had a series of 1,066 to finish 26 pins ahead of runner-up Marge Shaw of Valley Lutheran.

Cassel was among four area bowlers to finish in the top 10 and advance. Ithaca had two advance with Breonna Becker taking fourth and Emilee Fish was 10th. Isabella Russman tied for seventh.

Division 2 at Richfield Bowl

Owosso had two bowlers advance to the state finals led by junior Lily Kelley, who finished as the runner-up with a six-game total of 1,133. Junior Zoie Brandt also advanced for the Trojans and placed ninth with a total of 1,034.

Division 2 at Westgate

Ionia junior Sydney Estep earned a trip to the state finals after placing ninth with a score of 1,023. She was the only area bowler to finish in the top 10 at the regional.

Division 3 at M-66 Bowl

Olivet junior Olivia Krauss was the lone area qualifier after finishing ninth at the regional Sunday.

Division 3 at Sherman Lanes

Portland junior Lily Keller was the best area finisher and placed 16th at the regional.
