Indonesia’s Merapi volcano spews hot clouds after sudden eruption

Indonesia’s Merapi volcano erupted on Saturday (11 March), spewing smoke and ash into the sky.

The 2,963 metre-high volcano is one of the country’s most active and was already on the second-highest alert level before erupting.

Incredible footage shows the hot cloud filling the air after the Merapi, located in Indonesia’s Yogyakarta special region, erupted around 12pm local time.

Officials said over the weekend that no residents have been evacuated as a result of the incident.
