An indoor pickleball venue, a sewing shop and a brewery are among the retailers to be featured in the latest expansion of the Cannery complex within the village of Fairport.

The property is at the former site of an old canning factory at 75 N. Main St. in the village. In recent years, the area has been transformed into office and retail space, including restaurants, and popular spots such as the Faircraft Brauhaus, Compane Trattoria and Iron Smoke Distillery.

Earlier this week, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the Cannery project will receive $1 million through the Restore New York Communities

Initiative. The funds are some of more than $112.9 million being given to 70 projects, including $5 million to transform a pair of landmark buildings in Rochester into mixed-use developments.

Administered by Empire State Development, the program is meant to encourage commercial investment, improve the local housing stock and put properties back on the tax rolls.

The latest phase of the Cannery project includes the reuse of vacant industrial and warehouse space and renovation of a 42,775-square-foot structure to add offices, restaurants and other retail spaces.

Work is already underway to transform the building, which was initially built as a warehouse space in 1984 on the south side of the complex.

The developer, Donahoe Management, did not share additional details on the project. Indoor pickleball courts will be part of the revamped space, as will a brewery and Sew Creative, a sewing shop that also offers classes, said Village Manager Bryan White. A restaurant and other office space will be located within the building.

Pickleball is a sport that has seen rising popularity in recent years. It combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong and is played with a paddle and a plastic ball.

According to Village Planning Board minutes, the project was initially approved in 2020, and was updated with some smaller design details in January. Details on additional tenants were not available.
