INDOT to host public meeting regarding high-crash intersection in Princeton

PRINCETON — Indiana Department of Transportation representatives will be in Princeton, Indiana, next week to talk with residents about proposed intersection improvements on U.S. 41.

The area up for consideration is U.S. 41 and County Road 100 West in Gibson County, according to a news release from INDOT.

Community members are invited to a public meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at Princeton Community High School, 1101 N. Main St. in Princeton.

The intersection project would aim to improve safety at the intersection by lowering the number of "potential traffic conflict points," according to INDOT.

According to the state's legal notice of planned improvement, there are currently 24 potential crossing conflict points at the intersection.

INDOT's plan would reduce the number to four.

Crash analysis filed by INDOT states there were 14 crashes over a three-year period from Oct. 2013 to Sept. 2016 at the intersection. From Oct. 2014 to April 2019 there were 32 crashes.

The most common crash type was rear-end and right-angle collisions, INDOT found.

The project proposes to reconfigure the intersection by directing all northbound and southbound traffic on County Road 100 West onto U.S. 41. They would then make a U-turn across the U.S. 41 median before making a right turn back onto County Road 100 West.

According to INDOT, construction activities will include:

  • Removal of existing pavement in areas where median U-turns, raised concrete curb islands and new turn lanes will be constructed.

  • Construction of median U-turns within the U.S. 41 median.

  • Construction of raised concrete curb islands along U.S. 41.

  • Reconstruction of the existing U.S. 41 inside pavement to accommodate the left-turn lane.

  • Realignment of the north County Road 100 West approach to accommodate the new intersection.

  • Realignment of South 100 West to accommodate the realigned County Road 100 West.

  • Installation of new roadway signage, detention, pavement markings and lighting throughout the project area.

The cost of the project is about $2.9 million, according to INDOT.
