Industrial museum honors 6 manufacturing legends

The North Central Ohio Industrial Museum recently honored six manufacturing legends at the Champions of Industry dinner held at The Ohio State Reformatory, 100 Reformatory Drive.

The 2022 Champions of Industry are: Reid Carpenter (1853-1936), Glenn Vinson (1876-1956), Mill Pryor Sr. (1902-1999), Denny Schroeder (1930-2008), Tony Gerich and Mike Byrne.

Byrne, founder and owner of Michael Byrne MFG & Byrne Gear; Gerich worked at Therm-O-Disc and started BGW Industries, Gerich Fiberglass & FibreCore Trailers. Gerich, 83, is still working and lives in Morrow County, said Jerry Miller, who president of the museum, which operates inside OSR, the historic prison turned museum.

Bryne is 99 years old and lives in the Dominican Republic. Three of his eight children attended the event, Miller said.

Posthumously honored: Schroeder, started working at Mansfield Graphics, bought Richland Printing, and D & S Advertising. He started RICHNET and Commercial Cutting & Black River Display.

Carpenter was of Citizens National Bank, Mansfield Electric Railway, Mansfield Light & Power & Card Electric, Hunmphrey's Manufacturing and Ohio Brass. Carpenter's great-great-great grandson accepted the award.

Vinson worked for Card/Phoenix and started Ideal Electric, all which dealt with the street car industry.

Pyror of Michigan, started Pryor MFG, which made wheel and brake assemblies during World War II for bombers. He took over Barnes Pump Co. when it went bankrupt.

Each inductee received a personalized cutting board, laser etched by Miller Fabricating and Welding, at the Sept. 1 ceremony.

The speaker was Mansfield Senior High School Class of 1951 graduate Bud Sorenson, author of the book, "An Entrepreneurial Journey Through Life." Each guest received a copy.
