Indy 500 2022: Where eight former winners will start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The 2022 Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 29 on the 2½-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. Scott Dixon earned the pole position in time trials. Here are the former Indy 500 winners competing in year's race.

Scott Dixon

That's pole No. 5 for Dixon, who ripped off a 234.046 mph 4-lap run on the final attempt of qualifying in the No. 9 Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing. That stands No. 2 on the all-time qualifying list, only behind Arie Luyendyk's 236.986 in 1996. The 41-year-old New Zealander now has 5 pole starts, second only to Rick Mears' 6. Dixon won the race from the pole in 2008.

Tony Kanaan

The 47-year-old Brazilian was going for his second pole position (2005) but settled for 6th in the No. 1 Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing. The 2013 race winner will make his 21st Indy 500 start.

Takuma Sato

Sato had an eventful week of practice and qualifying. The 45-year-old from Japan had the top single lap in three practice sessions. In first-day qualifying, his first attempt was wiped out after he interfered with Marco Andretti's qualifying attempt. He came back with another attempt that put him in the Fast 12. The two-time race winner (2017, '20) came close to losing control in his final qualifying effort and he will start 10th in the No. 51 Honda for Dale Coyne Racing with RWR.

Will Power

The 2018 Indy 500 winner made the Fast 12 in the No. 12 Chevrolet for Team Penske. The 41-year-old Aussie will 11th.

Simon Pagenaud

The 2019 Indy 500 champ will start in the middle of the field, 16th. He qualified the No. 60 Honda for Meyer Shank Racing at 231.275 mph.

Alexander Rossi

A rough 2022 continues for the 2016 Indy 500 winner. Rossi had some strong practice laps during the week but qualifying didn't go his way. He withdrew his first run of 231.341 mph and had to take a 230.812 effort. The No. 27 Honda from Andretti Autosport is scheduled to start 20th.

Helio Castoneves

The defending and four-time winner (2001, '02, '09, '21) will have a hard time becoming the all-time Indy 500 champion. He took to the track in qualifying just as the heat and wind picked up, leaving him straddling a line — as he put it — between courage and insanity. He qualified 27th in the No. 06 Honda for Meyer Shank Racing.

Juan Pablo Montoya

The two-time champ (2000, '15) from Colombia hasn't been a factor this year. He lost his place in line on the first day of qualifying for failing tech inspection and later qualified 30th at 228.622. He drives the No. 6 Chevrolet for Arrow McLaren SP.
