IndyStar sports columnist Gregg Doyel was named the National Sports Media Association Indiana Sportswriter of the year Tuesday. It's the fourth time he's won the honor and 12th time in the last 14 years an IndyStar writer has won the award.

Doyel has been named one of the nation's top 10 columnists in his classification 10 times by the Associated Press Sports Editors, claiming top honors in 2014 and '17 at IndyStar. He was the first recipient of the Indiana Sports Corp's Inspiring Sports Storyteller Award in 2019.

Doyel will be honored at the annual NSMA awards weekend and national convention from June 25-27 in Winston-Salem, N.C. The late Stuart Scott, Hubie Brown, Curry Kirkpatrick and Jackie MacMullan will be inducted into the organization's hall of fame. Turner Sports' Ernie Johnson and Scott Van Pelt of ESPN tied for the national sportscaster of the year award and ESPN's Jeff Passan named the 2021 national sportswriter of the year.

Tim Newton, play-by-play announcer for Purdue football and women's basketball, was named the state's top sports broadcaster.

NSMA is a non-profit, honoring excellence in sports media since 1959.
