Infiniti launches an all-new crossover: QX30

Infiniti has two main markets: The United States and China.

That might explain why the all-new Infiniti QX30 debuted in Los Angeles and Guangzhou, China, less than 24 hours apart. Both cities are host to major auto shows this week and Infiniti wanted to put QX30 center stage for both shows with its dramatic styling and plush interior.

The QX30 will be a sporty alternative to more sedate luxury crossovers that have been flooding the market recently.

“With our recent sales successes and record growth, the current product offensive will further strengthen Infiniti’s global market position,” said Roland Kruger, Infiniti president, in a news release. “The active crossover, QX30 will broaden our offer to new customers around the world.”

Indeed, Infiniti sales are up 16 percent this year and the QX30 fits well in the small luxury crossover segment. Its low-slung roof (it’s 60.2 inches tall) and small proportions make it a good city vehicle that can weave through traffic and fit snuggly in tight spaces. It’s higher driving position means owners can look over lower cars in traffic. It’s pronounced exterior lines and raised body also give the QX30 a more rugged look.

Add to the sculpted lines and double arch grille helps define the future face of Infiniti – a brand that has struggled in recent years to define itself with consumers.

What owners won’t struggle with are the new seats, which were developed with Infiniti’s spinal support research. The seat backs were engineered to match the curvature of the spine and create support throughout the seat. This could help reduce driver stress and provide more comfort during long hauls. A brief tryout of the seats proved to be comfortable.

The QX30 will feature Infinti’s all-wheel drive system that can push up to 50 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear axle. It’s additional ride height should also give it more clearance, though this is not an off-roading machine. Its toughest courses will be a two-track to the weekend cabin.

While details on engine choices were not released, the QX30 will feature a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Infiniti did say that there will be gasoline and diesel engine options, dependent upon the market.

The QX30 arrives next summer.
