A social media influencer is stirring a wave of controversy over her “tone deaf” decision at a prominent beach destination.
The woman, who remains unidentified, was captured on video posing in a swimsuit on the beach in Canggu, a resort village in Bali, Indonesia. The clip, shared by a local community Instagram account, The Canggu Pole seems to show the woman holding her photoshoot directly next to a religious ceremony.

According to the NZ Herald, it appears as though a group on the beach was performing a Canang sari, a ceremony comprised of making daily offerings to thank the Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, which is the supreme God of Indonesian Hinduism.
Meanwhile, the unnamed influencer can be seen doing a series of squats on the waterfront, as a second individual circles them with a camera.
“Ignorancers In The Wild,” the clip’s caption read.
The footage, which has since been viewed more than 30,000 times, received a strong amount of backlash on social media, with commenters calling the photoshoot “disrespectful” and “inappropriate.”
“No respect at all… no manners,” one commenter wrote.
“This is sickening,” another added.
“There should be sanctions for this kind of behavior,” another added.
Most users’ comments focused on the photoshoot’s proximity to the ceremony, however others pointed out that the woman may not have even been at the beach in the first place.
It’s unclear when the video was filmed, however the viral clip was shared as Bali, an extremely popular tourist destination, continues to close its beaches amid the global health crisis.
In early June, two of the island’s beaches — including Canggu — briefly reopened to foreign surfers. That decision was reversed by Bali’s governor just one day later though.
