Richardson, 37, of Sidney was on duty and driving north in a marked patrol 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe on U.S. Highway 275 near 260th Street when he collided with a southbound combine driven by a Missouri man. The crash happened around 12:35 p.m., just south of Sidney, which sits about 12 miles north of the Missouri border.

The John Deere S770 combine was wider than the width of the lane it was in, according to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, and the left front tire on the combine was across the center line when Richardson's vehicle collided with it. Richardson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, the report showed.

State patrol authorities are still investigating the collision.

He went on to study criminal justice at Peru State College before attending the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center starting in May 2008, where he received his law enforcement certification on Aug. 7, 2008. Richardson was certified as a law enforcement officer through an exam at Iowa Law Enforcement Academy on June 26, 2012.
