A 50-year-old man was rescued at Camelback Mountain Friday morning, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Phoenix and Scottsdale firefighters were dispatched near E McDonald and Rhodes roads at about 1:30 p.m. after receiving reports from passerby hikers who found the man lying under a tree unable to move, according to Capt. Scott Douglas with the Phoenix Fire Department.

Crews hoisted the man into a helicopter ship and flew him down the trail, the department said. Medical personnel determined that the man experienced debilitating back spasms while hiking the mountain's Echo Canyon Trail, which is rated as extremely difficult, Douglas said.

Once off the trail, awaiting paramedics gave the patient additional medical treatment and took him to a local emergency department in stable condition.
