Inland Lakes girls second, boys fourth at home regional track meet

INDIAN RIVER – For a second consecutive year, the Inland Lakes girls track and field team finished runner-up at regionals.

Hosting a Division 4 regional meet on Friday, the Inland Lakes girls recorded 154 points, which was a distant second place behind first-place Johannesburg-Lewiston, which had 209 points. In the end, several Bulldogs ended up qualifying for the state finals, which will take place in just under two weeks.

Leading the Bulldogs' state qualifiers with two individual first places was Larissa Huffman in the 100 hurdles (16:45) and 300 hurdles (48.63), Lauren Fenstermaker in the 400 (1:03.08), and Hannah Robinson in the 800 (2:36). Also earning first was the 400 relay team of Lannah Engler, Alyssa Byrne, Olivia Monthei and Fenstermaker, who clocked a time of 55.88.

Natalie Wandrie picked up a pair of second places in the shot put (29-11) and discus (97-8), Huffman was second in the high jump (5-0), and the 1600 relay team of Engler, Huffman, Fenstermaker and Robinson was second with a 4:25 time. The 3200 relay team of Luci Bunker, Emma Duncan, Robinson and Engler also earned second, running an 11:21 time. Bunker took third in both the 3200 (14:23) and pole vault (6-0) and Robinson was third in the high jump (4-10). Picking up fourth places were Ashley Murray in the discus (65-7) and Fenstermaker in the 200 (28.62). Duncan was fifth in the 3200 (14:41), Murray was sixth in the shot put (25-0), and K.C. Cain was seventh in the 100 hurdles (20.65) and eighth in the long jump (12-2.5).

On the boys side, Inland Lakes finished fourth with 80 points.

Sam Mayer finished second in the 100 (11.63), while Ty Thompson earned second in the discus (106-10), Sam Schoonmaker was second in the high jump (5-11), and the 400 relay team of Dylan Zinke, Mayer, Evan Perreault and Schoonmaker earned second with a 47.27 time. Nevin Thompson was third in the shot put (37-1.75), and the 800 relay team of Wyatt Shovan, Perreault, Mayer and Schoonmaker was third with a 1:41 time. Fifth places went to Ty Thompson in the pole vault (8-6) and Nevin Thompson in the discus (98-6). Noah Shugar was sixth in the high jump (5-6), Jack Wilson was sixth in the shot put (34-8), and Mayer was eighth in the 200 (26.09).

"We are very pleased with (Friday's) outcome," said Inland Lakes coach Sarah Furman. "We have five boys advancing to the state meet in four events and nine girls advancing in 10 events. We are very pleased with a great overall team effort."

JoBurg finished first in the boys meet with 158 points.

Crull takes first three times for Onaway; Santiago wins high jump 

Leading the Onaway girls with three first-place finishes was Madilyn Crull, who won the 100 (13.20), 200 (27.30) and high jump (5-1). Crull’s three firsts helped the Cardinals finish sixth as a team with 61 points.

The 400 relay team of Crull, Charlotte Box, Lainey Shimel and Kailyn George earned second with a time of 56.74. Ellie Crull placed sixth in the 1600 (6:27).

For the Onaway boys, who finished sixth with 52 points, Xavier Santiago earned first place in the high jump (5-11). Jadin Mix placed third in the 300 hurdles (42.85), while Jager Mix was fourth in the shot put (35-10.5). The 3200 relay team of Jager Mix, Jadin Mix, Hudson Decker and Brendon Brewbaker also took fourth with a 9:08 time. Richard Aluague earned fifth in the 100 (11.95) and 200 (25.18), Brendon Brewbaker was eighth in the 400 (59.03), and Levi Rigot posted eighth in the discus (95-8).

Griffith leads Pellston boys track  

The Pellston boys finished in 10th place with 22 points. Leading the way was Laith Griffith, who took second in the 400 (54.65) and seventh in the 100 (12.04).

The 400 relay team of Griffith, Garrett Cameron, Preston Schmit and Logan Keiser earned fourth at 47.76. Coby Dyer was seventh in the 800 (2:16), Hunter Sonnenberg took eighth in the 1600 (5:54), and Cameron finished eighth in the 100 (12.12).

For the Pellston girls, Shaleen Otto placed eighth in the 300 hurdles (1:05.74).

The MHSAA Division 4 track and field state finals will be held at Baldwin Middle School in Hudsonville on Saturday, June 4.

Inland Lakes, Onaway and Pellston will each compete in the Ski Valley Conference championship meet at Inland Lakes on Wednesday, May 25.
