Inmate at the Community Reintegration Center dies in self-harm incident, David Crowley's office says

A man in the care of the Community Reintegration Center died at a hospital Wednesday after being found unresponsive in his cell the day before, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley's office said in a statement.

Antonio Bonaccorso, 29, was located in his cell pulseless and not breathing as the result of an apparent self-harm incident, Crowley's spokesperson Brandon Weathersby said Wednesday.

The staff at the Community Reintegration Center, with the help of Wellpath, the center's health care partner, immediately began CPR and called 911, Weathersby said. Bonaccorso's pulse was restored and he was sent by ambulance to a hospital and was placed on life support, but died Wednesday evening, Weathersby said.

The Racine County Sheriff's Office will conduct an independent investigation.

"This is yet another somber and chilling reminder of the acute and largely unmet mental health needs throughout all corners of our community," Crowley said.

"All persons in the County’s care and every County resident deserve affordable, comprehensive mental health support and resources. The death of one single person in the County’s custody is one death too many. We will continue to fight for the funding and system-wide reforms that are needed to ensure that this never happens again.”

Last year, the county renamed the House of Corrections facility in Franklin to the Community Reintegration Center.
