Inmate dies in Weber County jail custody

OGDEN, Utah (ABC4) — An inmate in the custody of the Weber County Jail reportedly died in the admissions area on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Officials did not release details regarding the death only that the individual – whose name, age and sex have not been disclosed – reportedly suffered from a medical emergency around 2:45 p.m.

Lt. Joshua Marigoni with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and medical staff immediately began life-saving measures and called for EMS. The life-saving measures continued until EMS arrived on scene and took over. The person was taken to the hospital and was later pronounced deceased.

Marigoni said the death is currently under investigation and that no further details will be released.

“Tragedies such as these are difficult for all of those involved and we will be working to provide resources for staff members and others involved in this incident,” said Marigoni in a press release. “We will be working to provide resources for staff members and others involved in this incident. We ask for patience as this case is investigated.”

In 2023, Weber County Jail had a series of four deaths within three months, most of which were described as “medical episodes.” In July 2023, Marigoni told ABC4 the jail has “solid policies” when it comes to the care of their inmates and the jail undergoes a review process following any critical incident to identify areas where officials can improve.

The jail is reportedly staffed with medical personnel on hand 24 hours a day seven days a week.
