Inmate stabbed at least 5 times at Sacramento County Main Jail. Deputies arrest 3 men

Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies arrested three inmates Wednesday, including a convicted murderer, following an attack in which an inmate was stabbed five or six times at the Sacramento County Main Jail downtown.

The victim, who has not been identified, was stabbed during “recreation time,” according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. The inmate was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, deputies said.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi declined to release the motive behind the stabbing.

Sheriff’s officials identified the three inmates who were arrested as Christopher Berger, 26; Ismael Herrera-Mondello, 23; and Francis Chavez, 38.

Berger was awaiting transfer to state prison after his conviction in a 2020 drive-by shooting in Sacramento that killed a man and injured three others. He was sentenced late last year in Sacramento Superior Court to 133 years to life in prison; court records show Berger scheduled to appear for a restitution hearing Feb. 16.

Herrera-Mondello faces several felony charges including attempted murder. Chavez was in custody at the jail after his arrest on suspicion of attempted murder.
