Inmate stabbed at Pasquotank Correctional Institute

PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — An inmate was stabbed several times at the Pasquotank Correctional Institute, according to the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday, Feb. 18 just before 1 a.m. deputies responded to the facility after learning an inmate had been stabbed.

When deputies arrived on the scene, EMS units were already assessing the victim injuries. The victim was identified as 38-year-old Jamaal Shawkir Griffin.

Griffin received 18 superficial lacerations from the assault on his head, shoulders, hands and legs.

He was taken to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center for treatment and transported back to Pasquotank Correctional after being released from the hospital.

Officials said another inmate has been identified as a suspect, and a homemade shank was found in the inmate’s cell.

At this time, the inmate has not been charged with any crimes.

This case is still under investigation.
