A West Valley Detention Center inmate died at a hospital days after he was admitted, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials reported.

On Thursday, deputies at the Rancho Cucamonga facility requested a nurse for a 63-year-old inmate, described as an unhoused San Bernardino man. The man seemed to be experiencing a "medical issue" and was conscious but unable to answer questions, sheriff's officials said.

Jail nursing staff examined him and called an ambulance to take him to a hospital, where he was admitted for medical treatment of numerous illnesses. On Sunday, the inmate died at the hospital.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded and began an investigation. The cause of death is under investigation.

The inmate's name hasn't been released.

The inmate was arrested by the San Bernardino Police Department in February 2021 on suspicion of felony vandalism and remained in jail until his death.
