Inmate who walked away from Ventura County jail apprehended

An inmate who walked away from a Ventura County jail last month has been apprehended, authorities announced Monday.

Jonathan Alfaro, 31, was being held at the pre-trial detention facility in Ventura when he disappeared from the facility grounds on Jan. 25.

Alfaro was assigned as a kitchen worker and was last seen on the loading dock before making his escape.

Authorities from multiple agencies immediately scoured the area for Alfaro, but the search came up empty.

In the days that followed, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office received multiple credible reports of sightings in the area.

Eventually, around 4 p.m. Sunday, officers from the Oxnard Police Department located the missing inmate walking on the 3300 block of South A Street in Oxnard.

He was taken into custody without incident and has since been booked back into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility to await new charges for felony escape, in addition to existing warrants for his arrest.

Alfaro is being held on a $112,000 bail and is due in court in the coming days, officials said.

“The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank members of the public for their ongoing support and due diligence in providing information to assist our agency in solving crimes,” a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said in a news release. “We are better at what we do because of our community partnerships.”
