Inmate who walked off jail kitchen job in Ventura still at large Sunday

Authorities on Sunday continued to search for an inmate who walked away from a kitchen post in Ventura Thursday night.

The man, 31-year-old Jonathan Alfaro, was in custody for a property crime and was not considered an immediate threat to the public, said Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. Greg Gibson.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday he remained at large, officials said.

Alfaro had been assigned to work in the kitchen at the sheriff's main jail at 800 S. Victoria Ave. Inmates are screened before they're allowed to work in the kitchen, Gibson said, and those with violent histories are ineligible. Alfaro had been in custody for a burglary offense.

He walked off the job around 7 p.m. Thursday. The sheriff's office sent out an alert Thursday night notifying nearby residents of his departure and asking for the public's help finding him.

Alfaro was last seen wearing jail-issued blue jeans and an orange T-shirt, although he may have changed clothes, officials said. He is 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds, with short black hair and a black beard and mustache.

If you see Alfaro, call 911. Don't try to make contact or apprehend him, authorities said. If you have helpful information about Alfaro or his possible whereabouts, you can call 805-654-9511.
