Inova Announces Plans For Franconia-Springfield Hospital

FRANCONIA, VA — On Tuesday, Inova Health System announced intentions to add a hospital in the Franconia-Springfield area. The hospital will be built on recently acquired property next to the Inova HealthPlex – Franconia/Springfield on Walker Lane.

Information on the size of the hospital, bed capacity and programming will be determined in the coming months. Inova Health System says in a news release the hospital's planning, regulatory processes and construction will likely take several years.

The hospital plan is part of Inova's eastern region assessment. In March, Inova announced plans for a new HealthPlex in Alexandria’s Oakville Triangle with an emergency room, multi-use outpatient care center and medical offices. This HealthPlex and future hospital in Franconia-Springfield are intended to "complement" the Inova Alexandria and Mount Vernon hospitals.

Inova is also reviewing modernization options for Inova Alexandria Hospital. Options such as renovations and relocations are being evaluated in coordination with Inova's partners and Alexandria officials.

"COVID-19 hit us hard, but it will not prevent us from moving forward as quickly as possible to expand access to care for the communities we are proud to serve," said Dr. J. Stephen Jones, president and CEO of Inova. "The ultimate plan for the eastern region demonstrates how we thoughtfully use our resources in service to our communities."

In April, NBC4 reported Inova Health System's layoffs of over 400 largely non-clinical employees. The layoffs were attributed to the costly response of the coronavirus crisis and revenue declines.
