Insatiable spoilers for seasons one and two follow.

When the first season of Insatiable hit Netflix, there was significant backlash from viewers.

The comedy-drama stars Debby Ryan as Patty Bladell, a teenager who was fat-shamed by her peers, lost weight after an accident which forced her to exist on a liquid diet for several months, and proceeded to wreak vengeance on those who had bullied her.

An online petition surfaced, which now has more than 230,000 signatures, with people calling for the series to be cancelled.

"This series will cause eating disorders, and perpetuate the further objectification of women's bodies," it argued.

But the show was renewed for a second season, despite the controversy.

"We knew that this societal brokenness needed to be addressed, but we didn't know how badly it needed to be addressed… I was like, I just want be really clear that I've never seen rage and disordered eating and this want for justice that's so misguided," Ryan told Teen Vogue.

"I think the message is you don't have to polish things up all the time and look a certain way. We all have something that we want or try to be. As long as we're sincere and transparent, we can fuel our desires to succeed and lead to redemption and to make things right no matter how we look. That's one thing I took away."

Her co-star Alyssa Milano added: "We are not shaming Patty. We are addressing (through comedy) the damage that occurs from fat shaming. I hope that clears it up."

Insatiable season 3 renewal: Is it coming back?

The second season landed on Netflix screens on October 11, 2019, so we were expecting to get season 3 news around November-time.

Netflix decides the fate of its shows within one month, so that timeline seemed reasonable.

As it turned out, November came and went, and our wait was a little longer. Sadly, as is so often the case when a follow-up series isn’t announced swiftly, the news wasn’t good.

In February 2020, it was confirmed that Insatiable had been cancelled by the streaming service after two seasons.

Why was it cancelled? In fact, why is any Netflix series cancelled, when they seem to have a fairly endless stream of money coming in? As it turns out, it’s complicated.

"It’s a combination of things. When we’re investing, we decide how much to invest based on the audience that will show up," Netflix’s head of original content Cindy Holland said of the streamer’s cancellation decisions (via Deadline).

"If the audience doesn’t show up, we think about the reason to continue to invest in something that doesn’t do as well as we had hoped. Obviously, critical acclaim is important too, but we’re really about trying to stretch our investment dollars as far as we can and make good on our investors’ money – it’s theirs, not ours."

Star Alyssa Milano tweeted her disappointment to the cancellation news, and highlighted one of the unresolved plotlines.

That’s an unusual thing to do, but perhaps Milano was signalling to a potential new broadcaster, in the hope they'd pick up the show, and finish the story.

After all, Insatiable started life as a CW pilot, so it’s been saved once before. There is a potential block here, however.

According to reporting by Deadline, there’s a clause in Netflix series deals from outside studios preventing those shows from airing elsewhere for a significant period of time, which could be as long as two to three years, making a continuation on another network/platform very difficult.

That information is based on rumour though, and, later in the article, One Day At A Time is referenced as a Netflix show with a deal that would allow it to appear on a network after mere months following its cancellation.

So, depending on the contract, Insatiable could still have all to play for.

Your guess is as good as ours at the moment.

Season one premiered in August 2018, while the second landed in 2019. With all the complications involved in finding a new home for the show, fans will have to prepare for a much longer wait, and maybe a whole bunch of online petitions, before they see season three somewhere else.

Insatiable season 3 trailer: When can I watch it?

First, we need that all-important pick-up by another streamer or network.

If it does get the green light, expect a triumphant trailer in the month leading up to the premiere.

Insatiable season 3 cast: Who's in it?

Insatiable season 3 plot: What will happen?

Show creator Lauren Gussis already has a plan in mind for future episodes, despite not knowing if the comedy-drama will return.

A third season would follow Patty as she tries to find her "own inner foundation and moral compass".

This comes after she vowed to murder Regina for framing Bob as the Pageant Killer, admitting: "Nothing tastes as good as killing feels."

Let's not forget she has already killed Stella Rose, Christian, Gordy and three drug dealers.

"What I will say is I feel like it's not cut and dry in so far as that she is a bad person and likes killing and she's irredeemable," Gussis told The Wrap.

"Listen, I come from eight years on Dexter, so I think, is that a character who is irredeemable, you know? To me, it's more about exploring the shadow parts of one's self and how low can somebody go and still come back toward the light?

"Patty feels like she's finally spoken some degree of truth, which is what everyone's been saying to her, 'You have to be honest if you're going to recover'. And she speaks some degree of truth about what she likes to do, but she still hasn't gotten to the truth that she needs to reevaluate her ethics, right? That's actually what recovery looks like."
