‘Insecure’ star Amanda Seales brings her ‘Black Outside Again’ tour to Brooklyn

Amanda Seales is ready to bring the funny to Brooklyn.

The comedienne, author, producer and actress — known for her work in HBO’s “Insecure” — will headline the “Black Outside Again Tour” at the Kings Theater in Flatbush on Saturday.

Incorporating much of her socially conscious brew of storytelling that has made her a hit on social media, the multiple city jaunt has already made stops in Detroit, Atlanta and is scheduled to hit Philadelphia, Chicago and Oakland before year’s end.

“The tour has been a journey,” Seales told The Daily News. ”It has been really great to just see how excited folks are at my shows, and [I] like the authenticity of the audience. It’s so dialed in. And I think I’ve genuinely missed that. Because I haven’t been out for two and a half years, so it’s been really cool to see that.”

Seales explains that the tour’s name is meant to be a strong cultural. “Especially considering what’s going on in this nation, being ‘Black Outside Again’ is being loud and proud in our identity, being loud and proud in our challenging of the erasure of the Black experience in this country and also being loud about enjoying our community and sharing with each other. And I feel like that was something that a lot of people were genuinely missing during this pandemic.

“So getting to be a part of creating that space for a lot of folks is really important to me,” Seales added. ”And that’s what I mean when I say we’re ‘Black outside again.’”

Since the Brooklyn date falls on Halloween weekend, the former co-host of “The Real” has something special planned to celebrate the season with the audience.

“It’s a special Halloween spectacular where we’re asking folks to come dressed up as their favorite Black character or icon,” she said, adding that Wu Tang Clan star Method Man and social justice activist Tamika Mallory will join in on the festivities.

“We always have two ‘Blacksperts’ ... so I’m over the moon excited to have [them] in the building on the stage for the ‘Smart, Funny and Black’ game show” segment, she said.

Seales, a native of Los Angeles, founded Smart Funny & Black Productions in 2019 with the mission to “produce and create art as edu-tainment across the media landscape by any joke necessary.” A live game show of the same title was spawned, allowing competitors to test their knowledge of Black history, Black culture, and the Black experience.

The tour not only gives the 41-year-old Seales an opportunity to engage with her growing fan base, it has also served as a catalyst for political action during the 2022 midterm election season. On National Voter Registration Day last month she announced a partnership with HeadCount, the national nonprofit organization that works with artists to help promote voter registration.

“I mean, when it comes to specifically the Black community, I really truly understand the apathy that so many people feel around civic engagement and so this is me trying to do my part to regenerate that involvement,” she said.
