The path to parenthood is different for everybody. Similarly, how you choose to parent your children is based on your own experiences, resources and personality. At Good Housekeeping, we recognize that while not every person parents the same way, there are many shared experiences, concerns and questions that moms and dads must confront every day.

Our yearly We Are Family Parenting Summit is all about starting interesting conversations and offering expert-approved advice in hopes of making all parents' lives just a bit easier. On March 31, we held our third annual We Are Family Parenting Summit, presented by Naturepedic, and focused specifically on topics like safe sleep, the power of play and parenting burnout. During the virtual event, we welcomed Today show co-anchors Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie for a heartwarming chat about their own experiences as mothers.

Welcome and Opening Remarks

General Manager of the Good Housekeeping Institute Laurie Jennings welcomed our virtual attendees and introduced all of the speakers. For this event, Good Housekeeping was proud to partner with Naturepedic, a 19-year-old organic mattress company dedicated to healthy sleep for everyone in the family.

The Study on Burnout in Women

If there was a word to sum up the last few years, it would be "burnout." And while it might vary where that feeling is coming from, a new study Good Housekeeping did in collaboration with Darria Long, M.D., and the University of Tennessee Chattanooga showed that burnout in women leaves many feeling stretched too thin and stressed out. Dr. Darria and Executive Textiles Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Lexie Sachs broke down what burnout actually means, the five factors that often contribute to it and potential ways to decrease stress to benefit both yourself and your children.

Toy Trends

Chief Technologist and Executive Technical Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Rachel Rothman shared our brand's vetted toy-testing process and elaborated on the different types of toys to accommodate a child's needs. She also explained what the future of the industry looks like and what that means for your children.

The Power of Play

Senior Parenting and Relationships Editor Marisa LaScala led a discussion on how to positively impact the social, emotional and physical development of your child. Rebecca Schrag Hershberg, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and parenting coach; Jessica Rolph, co-founder and CEO of Lovevery; Ann-Louise T. Lockhart, Psy.D., A.B.P.P., pediatric psychologist and parenting coach; and Melissa Bernstein, co-founder of Melissa & Doug Toys and Lifelines, discussed the role of playtime, how play can help children learn to regulate their emotions, and how shorter, simpler playtime (i.e. less toys) can be beneficial in the long run.

Safe Sleep: Chemical Concerns in Kid and Crib Mattresses

Senior Home Editor Monique Valeris sat down with Barry A. Cik, founder and technical director of Naturepedic Organic Mattresses, and Arin Schultz, senior director of sales and marketing of Naturepedic Organic Mattresses, to discuss safe-sleep habits, what safety features to look for in kid, crib, and adult mattresses and how Naturepedic aims to set the safety standard across the industry.

Safe Sleep with Naturepedic

Following an informative panel on safe sleep, Naturepedic shared a quick look at their waterproof Breathe Safe crib mattress.

A Look at Modern Parenting

In this intimate chat led by Style Director Lori Bergamotto, Today show stars Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie got real about being parents. Savannah reflected on her own childhood and how that experience influences her own parenting decisions today. Meanwhile, Hoda talked about her mother acting as her "north star" and guiding her as she grew up. The two also discussed their different journeys to motherhood, battling mom guilt, being "older moms," what modern parenting looks like and so much more.

Closing Remarks

Laurie Jennings closed out the third annual We Are Family Parenting Summit with a quick summary of the day's discussions.
