On Wednesday, Rivals released its updated class of 2024 basketball recruiting rankings, with plenty of key Kentucky recruits to be found near the top.

But what actually goes into the process of creating a list of top young basketball players, and what qualities are prioritized when making that list?

To answer this, the Herald-Leader spoke in late August to Rob Cassidy, who covers recruiting nationally for Rivals.

Cassidy explained the dynamics at play between the three players — Tre Johnson, Flory Bidunga and Ian Jackson — that were in contention for the top spot in the updated rankings, and also the internal discussions at Rivals that went into crafting the top of the rankings update.

Recruiting rankings are frequently cited when evaluating the performance of different college basketball coaches and programs, and Cassidy provided insight into how the rankings are formed.
