Inside the new remodeled Walmart coming to other Tallahassee locations

As the sun rose on the city Friday, many felt the heat as they lined up in front of the Walmart Supercenter’s doors in eastern Leon County, anticipating a redesign they have been waiting four months to see.

Golden yellow and blue balloons lined the newly remodeled Walmart Supercenter at 4021 Lagniappe Way, where, inside, new customer-centric features were displayed, including a redesign in the layout, delivery and pay features.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was performed by the store's associates at 9 a.m. Friday, June 30 at Walmart's Supercenter on 4021 Lagniappe Way.

Shoppers were greeted upon arrival by local organizations and the store’s associates including Asset Protection Host, Josilyn Irving – more informally known as “Ms. J” – as she cut the blue ribbon at 9 a.m. and unveiled the future of the Tallahassee location she has watched grow in her 20 years with the store.

“The associates are the ones that bring this to life,” store manager Kevin Willis told the Tallahassee Democrat.

The redesign efforts in Walmart's Fallschase Village Center location is part of the retail giant’s nationwide effort to make its stores more enticing with easier navigation.

The eastern Leon County location is the first to make the transformation. Next in line is the 5500 Thomasville Road site.

The store’s facelift and fresh coat of white paint has everyone excited, said Christy Martin-Lane, the store’s Academy Lead during a tour.

“It’s more aesthetically pleasing,” Martin said, pointing to the bold and updated signage, designed to give shoppers a “clearer understanding” of where they can find the items.

New digital signs stand out in illuminating departments, such as the pharmacy, bakery, and deli.

Clothing, bedroom and garden displays fill the store in a way that makes it easier for customers to choose. QR codes are displayed next to products providing more details about items.

New pickup, delivery and pay features are also a point of attraction and guests now have 26 self-checkout lanes to complete purchases, compared to the original six the store opened with two decades ago.

The front-end transformation also includes “ Grab N Go” coolers and a “dollar shop” where, you guessed it, items sell for $1.

Music from Blazin 102.3 reverberated from the parking lot festivities which included tents set up by Pepsi, Monster, Frito Lay and Coke providing free samples as shoppers made their way inside.

Store manager Kevin Willis also presented $6,000 in grants to local nonprofits, including Whole Child Leon ($5,000) and Boys Town of Tallahassee, $1,000.

Local organizations including Whole Child Leon received a donation of $5,000 from Tallahassee Walmart at the ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. Friday, June 30.
