Who inspires you? Who is your Woman of the Century?

This was an impossible job, but an important one.

Our goal was to raise up women who've made a difference in their communities and in their country over the past 100 years. We'd honor 10 in each state, district and territory, and 100 nationwide.

Of course, this would not be a complete list. But it would be a start, a way to spark conversation. A way to let our readers learn about or learn more about women of history as well as women of the moment. Here's how we did it:

  • We asked you for nominations of notable women.

  • We assembled panels in each state and nationally to help select the women who would be featured. They talked and debated and struggled and argued for their favorites and eventually came to consensus. We know many of these featured women stand in for or represent so many more who've made similar strides.

  • The editors then had to make choices. Some women could be on several state lists, but we had to choose just one. (For example, should Ruth Bader Ginsberg be New York or Washington, D.C.?)

  • And we stuck to the rules. Of course we'd love Madam CJ Walker on the list, but she died before 1920. So some names you might expect to see weren't alive in our time period 1920-2020.

Now we'd love to hear from you. Let's lift up more women. Who do you consider a "Woman of the Century." Let us know about her in the form below. Your comments may be used in future stories, videos or social posts.

Let's keep the conversation going.
