Inspiring Voices From the 'Food, Inc.' Awards: Breanna Kern

On Sunday, the winners of the first annual Food, Inc. Awards will be announced. Our panel of judges has selected some amazing winners—both familiar names and organizations and not-so-famous people alike, all inspired in singular ways by Robert Kenner’s film. But we received too many great submissions to not showcase some of those that aren’t receiving the official honors. So every day this week we are sharing some of our favorite video submissions as a way to highlight the voices and stories of people who have made the Food, Inc. movement a core part of their lives.

Today we have Breanna Kern, who was in high school and working part-time at McDonald’s when she saw the documentary in an English class. The impact was profound. “I don’t think its possible for a 16 year old to have a midlife crisis, but I sure felt like I was,” she says.

“When I saw the part about the chicken nuggets, it almost killed me inside,” Kern remembers, thinking about all of the chemicals she had consumed. But the influence of the film went beyond being grossed out. Instead, Kern started eating better, cutting out processed foods, and her regular meals at McDonald’s.

She’s in college now, at Arizona State University, where the fast pace of life makes it hard to turn down a quick meal. But Kern says she still tries to make it to the farmers’ market whenever possible, and she’s become known in her dorm as the one who actually goes grocery shopping. Another student recently called her over to his dorm room to show off own grocery haul—and  she’s proud to be motivating others.
