Insurers must be held accountable in Florida | Letters

Oversight needed for insurance

Can anyone explain this business model: Provide a service at top dollar that you have very little intention of providing. Then when you don't or delay that service and are taken to court, complain that you can't do business because too many people are suing you. This seems to be the model for the homeowners insurance industry. If you own your home outright, better to put those premiums into a bank account. How is that any worse than paying for a policy that doesn't pay out in a timely fashion, or not at all? Our Governor and those in Tallahassee need to focus on a real issue in Florida, not book bans and anti-woke agendas.

Democrats, take a stand

Re the Aug. 26 letter, "Democrats, 'get down' don't 'go high'": It is time to realize that we are dealing with people who will chew you up and spit you out and have no remorse about doing so. I believe in two axioms: "Fight fire with fire" and, more importantly, "Nice guys finish last." The Republicans are attacking Joe Biden using the same playbook they used against Hillary Clinton. They are willing to spend millions of taxpayer dollars and waste thousands of congressional hours to derail a Democratic candidate for president. Democrats, don't let it happen again.

State of K-12 education dismal

As a retired elementary school counselor in Palm Beach County, I am so disheartened by the state of education in Florida. I followed curriculum guidelines and taught character education, which included social emotional learning and basic skills for transition into responsible and successful adulthood. The state of Florida has now deemed critical thinking and independent thought dangerous to these young minds. Book banning, indoctrination from the right, and the inability of parents to make informed choices are a threat to the basic tenets of democracy. Moms For Liberty should be ashamed of themselves. Please recognize the dangers that lie ahead if we continue to allow Gov. DeSantis and the Florida Legislature to continue this assault on public education. Our children deserve better.

Trump disaster for foreign policy

Donald Trump recently made clear that when he’s elected, if Ukraine wanted U.S. help, it would be contingent on them abetting his revenge schemes. All of our allies are surely wondering what will be demanded of them to do business with us. U.S. foreign policy will be based on the whims of a very dangerous child. Russia's Vladimir Putin might just now be reaping the rewards of his election interference campaign in 2016.
