Inter Miami CF’s Andres Reyes released from hospital, back at team hotel after scary injury

Inter Miami CF defender Andres Reyes was released from a local hospital and returned to the Swan and Dolphin Hotel in Lake Buena Vista on Wednesday night after suffering a scary injury against Orlando City SC.

In the MLS is Back tournament’s opening match on Wednesday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, the Colombian defender had to be carted off the field in a stretcher in the 51st minute after a collision with Orlando City forward Dom Dwyer. Dwyer’s arm appeared to hit Reyes in the throat when the two were battling for the ball. Reyes immediately collapsed to the ground and appeared to be struggling with his breathing before being carted off the field.

Inter Miami captain and goalkeeper Luis Robles said losing Reyes, “completely changed the entire complexion of the game” and criticized referee Rubiel Vazquez for letting too many fouls go uncalled early on in the game.

“I have a lot of respect for [Dwyer’s] game and he has scored many goals on me,” Robles said. “But I also know that he’s a very physical forward, and if the referee is going to give him the type of margin, he’s going to be very impactful. You could see in the first half, there were several moments where the fouls were very hard coming in from behind. And yet he continued to say they were soft fouls.

“I don’t even blame Dom, I mean that’s just the way he plays it and like I said, I respect the way he plays. This is why he’s been so successful. I don’t even put that on Dom, I put that on the ref.”

Reyes’ injury took place shortly after Inter Miami took a 1-0 lead on a Juan Agudelo goal with an assist from Victor Ulloa in the 47th minute. Orlando City started their comeback shortly after Reyes left the game, scoring in the 70th minute and seven minutes into stoppage time to seal the 2-1 victory and dropping Inter Miami to 0-3 on the season.

Since he left the league’s “bubble” to go to the hospital, Reyes is being isolated in the hotel pending COVID-19 test results and clearance from officials onsite before he can rejoin his teammates.

Inter Miami will look to get the first victory in their inaugural MLS season when they face the Chicago Fire at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (ESPN, ESPN Deportes and TSN).
