Interactive space exhibit transports you from Chelsea to the moon

If you’re looking for something to do with the kids during February break, look no further than Space Adventure in Chelsea.

The interactive space exhibit will travel nationwide and is currently debuting right here in Massachusetts.

“It really is great for all ages,” said manager Nadene Freeman. “It’s educational, it’s informative, it’s fun. If you’re two or if you’re 92, it really is superb!” Space Adventure is an immersive, interactive exhibit that spans 35,000 square feet. It features more than 300 original NASA artifacts including items that traveled to the moon and a piece of the moon itself.

“This exhibit appeals to all of the senses,” said Freeman. “What you’re hearing, what you’re seeing, what you’re feeling, right down to I could say tasting, because there is an exhibit on the food that the astronauts actually eat and of course the touching and the sensory.”

Freeman said the exhibit has been a popular spot for field trips and senior trips, evoking memories and melancholy in older adults who watched the Apollo 11 moon launch live.

“This has given them the opportunity to go back and relive everything that happened in 1969,” said Freeman. “Then those that wouldn’t have really known about it, it brings it back to life for them.”

In addition to authentic space suits, tools astronauts used on the moon, and other items, the experience also includes a simulated rocket launch and virtual reality components.

“When Neil Armstrong is on the moon, they will be right there with him for that first walk on the moon,” said Freeman.

Freeman said the response has been overwhelming. The exhibit was set to leave Chelsea and travel to its next city at the end of the month, but it’s been extended through March 12.

Initially, the exhibit was only open Wednesday through Sunday, but now it is open seven days a week. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.
