India have an improbable task at hand to reach the final when they face Syria in their last group stage match of the Intercontinental Cup. After conceding nine goals in their first two matches, the Blue Tigers need to beat Syria by more than six goals in order to stand a chance of making it to the final.
India also need a favourable result from the other final round game. Tajikistan need to beat DPR Korea in their final match to make sure India still have a chance to progress.
It has not been a best of campaigns for India this time. After a gap of seven years, the Blue Tigers have conceded five goals in a single match (against DPR Korea on Saturday).
In their opening game, India had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half but helplessly surrendered to the superiority of Tajikistan in the second half who scored four times.
The second match was completely opposite of what happened in the first game. India were down 0-3 at half time. They tried to stage a comeback in the second half but DPR Korea’s persistence upfront did not allow Igor Stimac’s men to take control of the game completely.
The new Croatian coach has been experimenting with the Indian team since the King’s Cup in Thailand. He has been changing his personnel around as he strives to get a better idea of the players at his disposal.
But it now seems that Croatian coach has found his perfect first XI and he might field the best possible side in this do-or-die game.
Syria came into this tournament as favourites as they are the highest ranked side among the four teams. They began their campaign on a high with a 5-2 win over DPR Korea but were humbled in their very next game as they went down 0-2 against a much weaker Tajikistan.
The Syrian will also keep their eyes on the DPR Korea vs Tajikistan match. If Korea manages to pick up a win then they will have no other option but to collect full three points against the home team.
Can India upset Syria and gain some confidence before the World Cup 2022 qualifiers or will the Qasioun Nosour pick up a win and book their tickets for the final?
