International Flag Display at Pepperdine Honors Victims of 9/11 Attacks by Country

A display mounted in Pepperdine University’s Alumni Park in Malibu, California, on September 9 highlights the 90 countries that lost citizens in the 9/11 attacks 20 years ago, marking each victim with a national flag.

This drone footage by Phil Kreis shows a sea of 2,977 flags – mostly representing the US, but also the United Kingdom, Greece, and the Philippines, among others.

The ‘Wave of Flags’ display, started by Pepperdine students in 2008, is meant to educate people about US history and “the overwhelming sacrifices that heroic men and women have made to keep [the nation] safe, prosperous, and free,” according to the university’s website.
