I-5 shut down in San Joaquin County at Lathrop. Truck driver was shot, CHP says

The northbound Interstate 5 freeway was shut down in San Joaquin County on Thursday after the driver of a big rig was shot and the vehicle went off the freeway and into a building, California Highway Patrol said.

The California Department of Transportation reported the freeway was closed to northbound traffic at the junction with Highway 120 in Lathrop. Caltrans said the freeway shutdown was due to police activity.

At about 12:50 p.m., dispatchers received reports that a semi veered off the freeway and struck a building near the Louise Avenue offramp, said Officer Ruben Jones of Stockton CHP. Two parked vehicles also were struck.

Shortly after, there was a report that shots had been fired. Authorities confirmed the driver was struck by gunfire.

The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital. His condition was not known as of Thursday afternoon.

“At this time, there is no information on the suspect or the suspect vehicle,” Jones said in a text. There were no injuries in the building struck by the big rig.

Later Thursday afternoon, traffic was moving on northbound Interstate 5, with the freeway reduced to two lanes at the Highway 120 junction.

The CHP is investigating Thursday’s incident. Jones said there is no immediate danger to the public. Anyone with information that might help the investigation may call a tip line at 916-731-6580.

Authorities are asking for any video footage of the area during the time frame of the incident. Anyone with video may contact the CHP Valley Division Investigative Services at (916) 731-6580, or they can call the Stockton CHP office at (209) 938-4800.
