This intimate restaurant in a luxury Miami Beach resort just earned a Michelin star

A tiny restaurant in a luxury Miami Beach resort was awarded a Michelin star on Thursday.

At a ceremony at loanDepot Park in Miami on Thursday night, the 2023 Michelin Guide awarded a star to The Tambourine Room by Tristan Brandt at the Carillon Miami Wellness Beach Resort in Miami Beach. The intimate, 18-seat restaurant, tucked away in the corner of the resort’s lobby, serves modern French cuisine with Asian influences, with a menu that changes frequently.

The guide praised The Tambourine Room’s bold flavors. Here’s what it had to say:

“Inside the Carillon Miami Wellness Resort on a rather calm stretch of Collins Avenue, find this ambitious dining bijou helmed by Chef Tristan Brandt and his trusted lieutenant Timo Steubing. The duo delivers a colorful, multicourse tasting grounded in French cuisine with notable Asian inspiration. The results are anything but timid: Expect rich, bold sauces and foams made with the likes of parmesan, lobster and saffron, and ginger turbocharging everything from tomatoes to scallops to wagyu. By contrast, the space itself is fairly spartan, sequestered off to the side of the main hotel bar and defined mostly by oversized oak tables, blue leather chairs and modern light fixtures. Swing for the second seating of the evening for a longer menu.”

Brandt, who led the restaurant Opus V in Mannheim, Germany, to two Michelin stars in 2013 and earned a star for his restaurant Epoca in Switzerland in 2022, told the Herald that “We wanted to show Miami something new” when The Tambourine Room opened.

“We are excited in this short time to get the first Michelin star for our restaurant in Miami,” said Brandt at the ceremony at loanDepot Park. “It’s great to be together with the team to get the award today.”

L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami in the Design District, remains the only Florida restaurant to earn two Michelin stars and retained both for the 2023 guide.

The 10 other Miami-area restaurants that received stars in 2022 retained their stars as well: Ariete in Coconut Grove; Boia De in Little Haiti; Cote Miami in the Design District; The Den at Azabu in Miami Beach; Elcielo in Miami; Hiden in Wynwood; Le Jardinier in the Design District; Los Félix in Coconut Grove; Stubborn Seed in Miami Beach; and The Surf Club Restaurant in Surfside.

“This award means so much to the Le Jardinier team, and it solidifies the consistent work we all put in every day,” said Max McCarthy, Chef de Cuisine at Le Jardinier Miami.

Three Tampa restaurants were also added to the 2023 guide: Koya, which serves Japanese cuisine; Lilac at the Tampa Edition hotel, which serves Mediterranean and Florida-focused fare; and the Italian restaurant Rocca.

All but three of Miami’s Bib Gourmand restaurants — a designation that recognizes great food at a great value — retained their status. Krus Kitchen in Coconut Grove, Red Rooster Miami and Itamae in Miami’s Design District lost the designation.

Two new restaurants were added to the Miami Bib Gourmand list a week before the ceremony: Rosie’s in Little River and Jaguar Sun in downtown Miami. Known for its cocktails, Jaguar Sun also earned the Michelin Exceptional Cocktails Award for its bar team.

The other Bib Gourmand restaurants in the Miami area are Bachour; Chug’s Diner; Doya; El Turco; Ghee Indian Kitchen; Hometown Barbecue; La Natural; Lucali; Lung Yai Thai Tapas; Mandolin Aegean Bistro; Michael’s Genuine Food + Drink; Phuc Yea; Sanguich de Miami; Tinta y Café; Zak the Baker; Zitz Sum.
