Introducing the 2022 All-Iowa boys high school cross country honorees
The Des Moines Register is pleased to announce the All-Iowa boys cross country teams for the 2022 season.
The teams include a six-person Elite Team, made up of the state’s best runners, regardless of class, as well as first-team selections for all four of Iowa’s classes. The teams were picked based on in-season results and observations from the Register.
Members of The Register’s All-Iowa boys cross country Elite team are nominees for the boys cross country runner of the year.
Elite team
Ethan Eichhorn, jr., Lewis Central
After placing in Class 4A the previous two years, Eichhorn made a smooth transition to the Class 3A level with his teammates.
Eichhorn was among the Class 3A leaders all season, but saved his best race for last. After finishing 16th in 4A as a freshman and 13th in 4A as a sophomore, Eichhorn took the 3A state championship this season by 1 1/2 seconds over Jedidiah Osgood.
Eichhorn helped Lewis Central finish 13th in the 3A team standings and put himself as the favorite heading into his senior season.
Jackson Heidesch, sr., Dowling Catholic
Heidesch not only successfully defended his Class 4A state championship, he did so in dominating fashion.
Heidesch was undefeated against Iowa runners this season, his only loss coming to Noah Breker of Robbinsdale Armstrong (Minnesota) at the Griak Invitational. Breker finished third in the Minnesota Class AAA state meet.

Heidesch, who placed third in 4A as a sophomore, helped the Maroons with back-to-back 4A team titles and three in four years.
Jacob Mumey, sr., Pleasant Valley
Mumey, who trains on one of the toughest courses in the state, finished fourth in Class 4A this season after placing 17th and 115th the previous two seasons.
The senior won the Mississippi Athletic Conference meet and finished second to Ford Washburn of Iowa City High at a state qualifying meet.
Mumey helped the Spartans finish ninth in the 4A team race.
Jedidiah Osgood, sr., Marion
Osgood was one of the top runners in Class 3A the last three seasons, finishing second behind Eichhorn this season at state.
Osgood finished fifth in 3A as a junior, 18th as a sophomore and was 52nd as a senior.
Osgood helped the Wolves to consecutive Class 3A team runner-up finishes the last two seasons.
Jaxson Plumb, sr., Johnston
Plumb continued to improve throughout his four years, culminating in a third-place finish at state in 4A as a senior.
Plumb finished 103 in 4A as a freshman, missed state as a sophomore and placed sixth as a junior.
Plumb helped the Dragons finish second in the Class 4A team race after finishing fourth in 2021.
Ford Washburn, sr., Iowa City High
Washburn may have been the best runner in the state not named Jackson Heideisch.
He stayed with Heidesch at the state meet until the 4K mark, finishing second after placing fourth, sixth and 20th the previous three seasons.
Washburn helped the Little Hawks finish seventh in the Class 4A team race this year.
