Introducing the 2022 All-Iowa girls high school cross country honorees
The Des Moines Register is pleased to announce the All-Iowa girls cross country teams for the 2022 season.
The teams include a six-person Elite Team, made up of the state’s best runners, regardless of class, as well as first-team selections for all four of Iowa’s classes. The teams were picked based on in-season results and observations from the Register.
Members of The Register’s All-Iowa girls cross country Elite team are nominees for the girls cross country runner of the year.
Elite team
Paityn Noe, sr., Ballard
Noe became the new standard-bearer in girls cross country for the state of Iowa this season.
She repeated as Class 3A state champion for Ballard after taking third as a freshman and second as a sophomore. She broke the girls state 5-kilometer record on three occasions during the process, capping off her record-setting season by becoming the first Iowa high school female runner ever to break 17 minutes by running a 16:48.58 at the state finals.
Noe also helped the Ballard girls take second as a team in 3A for the second year in a row after winning back-to-back state titles in 2019 and 2020.
Adrienne Buettner-Cable, sr., Des Moines Roosevelt
Buettner-Cable took 4A by storm in girls cross country this season.
The Des Moines Roosevelt senior placed 12th at last year's state meet in 19:02.03. She gradually moved her way up the rankings this season, breaking 18 minutes on multiple occasions to earn the No. 2 spot prior to state.
At state, Buettner-Cable raised the bar again. She finished in 17:41.24 to win her first 4A state championship by over 20 seconds and dethroned defending champion Addison Dorenkamp of West Des Moines Valley.
Danielle Hostetler, jr., Mid-Prairie
Hostetler became just the eighth runner in Iowa history, including her older sister Marie, to win her third-consecutive individual state cross country championship by claiming the 2A title at the state co-ed meet on Oct. 28 in Fort Dodge.
The Mid-Prairie junior completed the 5K course in 18:41.64 to win the race by over 20 seconds. With one more year to go, she could become only the second four-time champion in Iowa history.
Noelle Steines, soph., Calamus-Wheatland
Steines also could become a four-time individual champion after repeating as 1A champion during her sophomore season.
Steines nearly didn't get the opportunity to repeat after suffering a partially torn patellar tendon three months before the state meet. But she fought her way back to earn the No. 1 ranking and at state Steines won an exciting battle with Sibley-Ocheyedan's Madison Brouwer for the 1A championship.
Steines ran an 18:39.45 at state and Brouwer finished in 18:42.12.
Addison Dorenkamp, jr., West Des Moines Valley
Dorenkamp wasn't quite able to follow up her 2021 4A girls state championship after placing fourth at this year's state meet.
But Dorenkamp still turned in a successful junior season. She was ranked No. 1 all year until state and broke 18 minutes on multiple occasions, peaking at 17:31.4 during the Fort Dodge Invitational.
Dorenkamp's time at state was 18:07.97.
Olivia Verde, jr., Johnston
Verde continued to climb up the 4A girls rankings at state after placing second to Buettner-Cable on Oct. 29 in Fort Dodge.
Verde took seventh individually as part of Johnston's 4A state championship team during her freshman year with a time of 18:27.9. She placed fourth as a sophomore in 18:23.93 and on Oct. 29 she clocked in with a PR time of 18:01.57 to edge Dubuque Hempstead's Julia Gehl (18:03.20) and Dorenkamp for second.
