Introducing Ecolomondo (CVE:ECM), The Stock That Dropped 33% In The Last Year

The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. That downside risk was realized by Ecolomondo Corporation (CVE:ECM) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 33%. That contrasts poorly with the market return of 0.8%. Ecolomondo may have better days ahead, of course; we've only looked at a one year period. The last week also saw the share price slip down another 26%.

With just CA$35,015 worth of revenue in twelve months, we don't think the market considers Ecolomondo to have proven its business plan. We can't help wondering why it's publicly listed so early in its journey. Are venture capitalists not interested? So it seems shareholders are too busy dreaming about the progress to come than dwelling on the current (lack of) revenue. Investors will be hoping that Ecolomondo can make progress and gain better traction for the business, before it runs low on cash.

We think companies that have neither significant revenues nor profits are pretty high risk. There is almost always a chance they will need to raise more capital, and their progress - and share price - will dictate how dilutive that is to current holders. While some such companies do very well over the long term, others become hyped up by promoters before eventually falling back down to earth, and going bankrupt (or being recapitalized).

Ecolomondo had net debt of CA$1,230,319 when it last reported in September 2018, according to our data. That makes it extremely high risk, in our view. But since the share price has dived -33% in the last year, it looks like some investors think it's time to abandon ship, so to speak. In reality it's hard to have much certainty when valuing a business that has neither revenue or profit. Given that situation, would you be concerned if it turned out insiders were relentlessly selling stock? It would bother me, that's for sure. It only takes a moment for you to check whether we have identified any insider sales recently.

A Different Perspective

Given that the market gained 0.8% in the last year, Ecolomondo shareholders might be miffed that they lost 33%. While the aim is to do better than that, it's worth recalling that even great long-term investments sometimes underperform for a year or more. The share price decline has continued throughout the most recent three months, down 22%, suggesting an absence of enthusiasm from investors. Given the relatively short history of this stock, we'd remain pretty wary until we see some strong business performance.
