Introducing Your Next Summer Look: Heartbreaker Braids

FYI, color isn’t the only way you can experiment with your braided styles—and this look is all the proof you need. This week’s Braid Up style reimagines the classic stitch-braid ponytail by weaving in hearts throughout the look. And not only is there a huge braided heart in the back of look, but there’s also mini hearts in the middle and side parts that make up the braided ponytail. Cute, right?

These bb hearts show that all it takes is a few simple tweaks to switch up your style, amp up your look, and pull yourself out of any hair rut. Our usual expert, Stasha Harris, is handing off braiding duties to Chassity Morales, NYC-based hairstylist, to show you how it’s done in the video above.

Down to try out this look yourself? Here's a few things to keep in mind:

1. Part your hair with a rat-tail comb. It’s a must-have, especially since clean parts are so important to this style. The skinny tail allows you to part through thick hair easily so you can get sleek lines with basically no effort.

2. Work mousse into your braided ponytail, and then hit it with a blow dryer. This helps to set your braids, smoothing down any potential flyways that could derail your finished look.

3. Add some beads on the ends of your braids. They're a super fun way to accessorize the look—you can even switch them out with hair cuffs if you get bored.

4. Dip the ends of your braids in hot water. This tip will help ensure that your ends are sealed and secured and won’t unravel. Bring a pot of water to a boil and then carefully dip in your ends.
