As you scroll through your Instagram feed this lunch break don’t be alarmed if you come across an image of this cake. No doubt your reaction will be similar to those who have already commented “What is it!?” and “This confuses me”, after laying eyes on it.

The good news is that it’s not an eyeball, a breast implant or any kind of weird body part. It’s simply an unoffensive edible raindrop.

Yes, the craze of Instagrammable foods has been taken to a WHOLE new level of ridiculous. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any more hipster than the rainbow bagel or cronut.

The imaginative invention is the creation of Japanese chef Darren Wong. While the raindrop cake has only been available in Japan thusfar, they’re soon set to be sold at Smorgasburg in New York. Although that doesn’t really help us over here in Blighty…

Although it’s advertised as a cake, a real foodie may argue that its substance, made out of mineral water, agar and the option of roasted soybean flour (mmm delicious) doesn’t really justify it calling itself a cake. And it’s calorie-free, so it’s probably definitely not a cake.

But we have to admit it is very intriguing and now we can’t stop thinking about ways in which we could get our hands on this weird and wonderful food.

Do we want to eat it? Not really. But we definitely want to jiggle it around and gaze at it while eating a proper slice of gooey chocolate cake.
