Intruder at tax office indicted on terroristic threat allegations

A man accused of threatening Tax Collector Tommy Smyth and others in the Wichita County tax annex in April 2021 has been indicted by a Wichita County grand jury.

The grand jury handed down the indictment March 1 against Grant Johnson of Electra.

Court affidavits in the case allege Johnson went to the tax office for a vehicle title change and registration but became enraged when he was told he would have to pay taxes on the value of the vehicle and confronted Smyth.

Smyth and other workers stepped back into a secured area. Johnson attempted to kick the door open and manipulate the keypad to the secured area, according to affidavits. A deputy escorted Johnson from the building but he was later charged with Terroristic Threat, Impeding Public Service, Public Fear of Serious Bodily Injury.
