The Destin Fire Control District confirmed Thursday that no rip currents were present in the area where former NFL and Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett reportedly drowned Tuesday afternoon.

Yellow flags were flying in the area at the time, which indicates medium hazard and moderate surf and current conditions.

Florida beaches use a warning flag system to indicate different tide and surf conditions. Flags are placed along beaches to let swimmers know whether or not conditions are safe.

These new details do little to shed light on what led to Mallett’s death, which sent shockwaves throughout the football community late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the nature of Mallett’s death.

What happened to Ryan Mallett

First responders were called to the 700 block of Gulf Shore Drive in Destin around 2:12 p.m., on Tuesday, where a group of people near a sandbar had reportedly been struggling to make their way back to shore, according to the OCSO.

One of the people, an adult male, went under and lifeguards said he was not breathing when he was pulled out of the water.

Lifesaving measures were immediately undertaken but the man was pronounced deceased at the Destin Emergency Room.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed Mallett’s identity shortly after.
